Italy, Algeria Discuss Boosting Energy Cooperation Amid Iran Conflict
"We have decided to strengthen our very solid cooperation, including by working on new fronts such as ocean and offshore gas, and this will allow us to strengthen gas flows," Meloni said at a joint press conference in Algiers following her meeting with Tebboune.
The Algerian president expressed gratitude for “strategic collaboration in all areas of mutual interest.”
Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global trade and energy, has been heavily disrupted due to escalating Gulf tensions after US and Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28 and subsequent Iranian retaliation.
Addressing the current “supply challenge,” Tebboune reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to meeting its obligations to Italy, calling the country “a strategic and reliable partner.”
Meloni also welcomed reports of potential peace talks between Iran and the United States during her visit. “It would be excellent news, and Italy will support any initiative for peace and stability,” she said, noting she shared her concerns about escalating tensions in Lebanon with the Algerian president.
