Greece Expands Naval Power with Italian Frigate Deal

(MENAFN) Greece has approved the purchase of two second-hand FREMM-class frigates from Italy as part of a broader effort to strengthen its naval capabilities, according to reports.

The decision was made during a meeting of the Government Council for National Security, chaired by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in Athens.

Alongside the frigate acquisition, officials also approved upgrades to Germany-made MEKO-class frigates already in service, as reported by local media.

The council additionally endorsed a new National Strategy for Unmanned Vehicles covering the period 2026–2030, signaling an increased focus on modern defense technologies.

During the session, officials also reviewed regional security developments, including tensions in Lebanon, instability around the Strait of Hormuz, and reported plans by Turkey to advance its maritime doctrine known as “Blue Homeland.”
